Pipes of basalt

Pipes of basalt
Aubrac is part of the Auvergne region of France, and when you say Auvergne, you say volcanoes. Even though they have all been extinct for rmillenia, the volcanoes of Auvergne have left many telltale signs of their past activity, including those characteristic pipes of basalt where the tip of the lava flow, once semi-liquid, solidified for eternity.

In France we call them "orgues basaltiques", i.e."basaltic organ", in reference to the many neatly aligned pips of an organ.
