The lower courtyard at Peyrelade

The lower courtyard at Peyrelade
This rocky and uneven space, carefully enclosed by a sheet wall (higher and stronger at the back, where the ground allowed less perilous access), that served as a lower courtyard, or rather "higher courtyard", as this was closest to the keep. There was another space, inside the first sheet wall and much larger, where permanent dwellings were built, and that served as the "real" lower courtyard.

Of course, space being at a premium and slopes being so steep on every side, Peyrelade's configuration differs from the more usual Mediæval castles.
