“Each has its lesson; for our dreams in sooth, come they in shape of demons, gods, or elves, are allegories with deep hearts of truth that tell us solemn secrets of ourselves.”
(Henry Timrod - American poet, 1828 -1867)
Those ladies were standing at a platfrom which is located near Munsi ghat in Varanasi (Benaras).
They were watching the Ganges and they were making a sculptural group that reminded me Neoclassical statues like those of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
This allegorical representation is taking a different meaning today when India has to face terrible drought in the north of the country while the worst flooding in many decades are in the southern Indian states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh (the top two producers of the grain in the country).
The floods triggered by heavy rains over the last week left 2.5 million people homeless and has killed some 250 people.
At least five million people are crammed in temporary government shelters, 240 000 houses and crops in 25 000 hectares have been damaged in the rain and over 4,500 head of cattle have also perished...
Who knows when this meteorological madness will stop.
For the moment only donations to the official institutions can help.
