These men are dressing an elephant with its caparison set (decorated covers) before the start of the annual Kandy Esala Perahera in Sri Lanka. A caparison set like this will take 6 tailors and seamstresses up to 2 months to make. Handmade for each elephant, a caparison set contains both traditional and modern motifs. It must be attractive and delicate in appearance, yet tough enough not to be damaged by the study elephant and the riders and turret on its back.
