Former Trans Island Bus Services (Singapore) TIB 398K at a workshop near Pampisford, UK – 17 Jun 1997 (360-08)
Tuesday 17 June 1997 – It was rather a surprise to see this former Singapore bus once operated by Trans Island Bus Services near Cambridge, England!

A number of their former vehicles were bought by Capital of West Drayton, Middlesex for airside work at Heathrow Airport and I suspect this one was here for preparation work of some sort.

A few of these acquisitions were later sold on and continued in passenger service with other operators although others found use as mobile bars/hospitality units (The Kent brewer Shepherd Neame had one as their ‘Spitfire Bar’ named for one of their front line products).

Still carrying its Singaporean registration plate TIB 398K, it is a DAF SB220 with Spanish built Hispano Carrocera bodywork.

The bus was at the premises of D.B. Commercials in London Road, Pampisford. Where the photograph was taken is now the much expanded and modernised ‘Sawston Park’ which now houses some diverse businesses including showrooms/sales outlets for home enhancement features etc.

(Background reading: One of these imports received British registration G134 CLF and was operated on public bus services by Swanbrook Transport of Cheltenham and became Shepherd Neame’s ‘Spitfire Bar’. Other bar conversions were registered G387 GLE (ex TIB 396R?) and G429 GLE (ex TIB 394X).

Other British registrations included G194 CLF on a vehicle latterly acquired for use at the Stena Ferry Terminal in Holyhead, North Wales; G195 CLF operated by McEwan’s Coach Services, Dumfries; and G136 CLF operated by Tate’s of Markyate).
