Kolbeinn Erlendsson’s Mercedes-Benz coach R 364 during a stop at a pumice quarry on road 26 near Burfelsstod, Iceland - 22 July 2002 (491-03)

Many lesser roads in Iceland are just gravel or dirt surfaced and in the highlands involve crossing stony river fords. As a result rugged high chassis 4x4 coaches are very common. Mercedes-Benz R 364 was operated by Kolbeinn Erlendsson based in a hamlet near Bólstaðarhlið about 21km (13 miles) east of Varmahlið. We spent one week touring on this rugged little coach and it turned out to be a comfortable vehicle to travel in. It still carried the livery of Guðmundur Jónasson hf from whom it had been acquired secondhand. Seen at a pumice quarry near Burfelsstod on road number 26.
