Thanks Rob, it was a fun shoot. Nothing like being out on the beach in the middle of the night, stars above, dark waves only visible via the torch light. Quite peaceful, in a waves crashing kind of way ;-)

beached dragon.

you know dave - i did a lot of cave photography back in the 70's and used to paint with ligfht often (though never called it that) but never with a torch. probably because torches were not as strong back in those days. i used a handheld flash and walked around in the frame flashing various bit. occasionally used magnesium ribbon.

anyway - i like this a lot.

I did another with a hand-held flash later when the torch gave out. The torch is really really bright, but only lasts for 1/2 hr of continuous use on one charge (and takes 20 hours to charge). You get a half dozen or so exposures from the torch and then you're done. If the tides were at a more reasonable time on this trip we'd have got blueish sky over the wreck and maybe some star trails, but being so early in the morning, everything was black and the stars didn't come up too well in the shot.

Is there a way for you to get more time from the torch? i.e. turn it off and on...could you use smaller flashlights while you set the shots up and then just put the torch on for a minute or two...repeat the process etc.

That's precisely what we did Mel :)

I had little glowstick bracelets that we put on the tripods so we wouldn't trip over them in the dark, a smaller Dolphin torch for setting up the shot and general navigation and we only turned on the spotlight when we were shooting. I think we shot for about an hour and a half (including setup times) on the one spotlight charge.
