Old Man Hornbeam

Old Man Hornbeam
Form'd half beneath, and half above the earth,
We sisters owe to art our second birth:
The smith's and carpenter's adopted daughters,
Made on the land, to travel on the waters.
Swifter they move, as they are straiter bound,
Yet neither tread the air, or wave, or ground:
They serve the poor for use, the rich for whim,
Sink when it rains, and when it freezes swim.

No power failures here in Cambridge ... just the usual transport chaos that greets the first snow flake! :))))

I love trees
especially old winter trees
I remember having "adored" those somptuous trees in sherwood forest
something we haven't in France when compared to your country
the love of old trees in that so natural and authentic way

The English have a particular fascination with these venerable veterans ... a type of tree worship. I still get excited when I see a new veteran!
