Piazza del Popolo


Am Ende der Via del Corso gelegener, großer, ovaler Platz. Früher betrat man hier durch das Stadttor von Norden her die Stadt. In der Mitte steht der 24 m hohe, schon in der Antike uralte Obelisk. Ursprüngich für den Sonnentempel von Heriopolis angefertigt, wurde er 10 v. Chr. aus Ägypten nach Rom transportiert und 1589 an diese Stelle gebracht.
