Leucistic Sandhill Crane

Leucistic Sandhill Crane
Monte Vista NWR, Monte Vista, Colorado - Taken at the 2013 Sandhill Crane Festival, this was the only bird in thousands displaying the "Leucistic" (white) coloring. I'm especially happy that I was able to get this shot because it was taken at incredible distance. Even with adding dual extenders to my telephoto lens, this view is only 1/6 of my viewfinder. If I did the math correctly, that is a 35mm focal length nearing 4000mm.

.. what a wonderful experience! Loved being around Sand Hill Cranes in Florida --- but never saw this!

.. thank you for visiting --- the Pineapple Guava flower was a challenge to photograph -- half of the shots looked terrible .... then, got this one!

It's always interesting to be able to capture a Leucistic or Melanistic bird as they are unusual, bravo !!

Magnificent capture! We live in a golf course community and have had over the years many families of sandhill cranes come to our yard for the corn we provide. I have never heard of let lone seen a leucistic sandhill. Thank you for the opportunity.

We didn't notice this bird when we attended the 2014 Festival, I'll likely be back again next year hoping for another glimpse ;)
