UNION PACIFIC

Union-Pacific Railroad 2.4kV - Caldwell, ID

Came across this neat old bugger today! Looking at it, it appears that many of the open wire lines are still in service, running the rail signals. On the top arms is a power line, likely running at 2.4kV ungrounded single phase. A shield wire is tied to insulators on the ridge pins.

Look at all that glass! Glass on the shield wire, glass on the power primaries, and glass on the signal lines. Just beautiful! At the left is an Idaho Power 7.2kV single phase distribution line.

Here's a nice old pole! Looks like the power primary (top arm) may have been changed from three-phase to ungrounded single phase, with the middle phase serving as a grounded shield wire. Both the outer (live) phases have lightning arresters on them.

Here's a cool transfomer pole, with a bunch of live signal equipment on the lower crossarms. Primaries are either 2.4kV or 4.8kV, ungrounded single phase.

Here's a few more old poles on the railroad line. Note the long ridge pins and glass insulators on the power distribution primaries.
