When your wife tells you an appliance is not working, and she thinks it is the thinga-me-jig which needs replacing, it's best to nod sagely and agree, and wonder to yourself how to describe it to the manufacturer in order to have a replacement sent...

Looks like the control unit from a washing machine to me, and if that's what it is- having replaced one before, I would strongly advise just buying a new machine!

It's only sixteen years old! It is an American Frigidaire heavy duty top loader which can't be replaced in the UK we bought a Bosch replacement but she insists she wants this fixed, so fixed, it will be!

That's not at all old. I kept one running over 20 years- but finally gave up...
(Is the cam sets ok?. Usually it's the electric 'clock' drive that goes wrong. In which case it might be possible to get just a sync motor for it.)
