Oldtime writing. How it felt to read signboards in the 1800s.

Re 'expens': To drop the final 'e' from words ending in -ense is to indicate that the word should be pronounced with a 'z' sound at the end, instead of an 's' sound.

Compare:
• in my defense ⇶ in my defens
• my driver's license ⇶ my driver's licens
• I'm super-quick to take offense at... ⇶ I'm super-quick to take offens at...
• You ain't got any sense; your to dense. ⇶ You ain't got any sens; your to dens.
