The picture shows times of transition in the evolution of the design of outdoor mailboxes mounted at the street-level entrances to upstairs apartments in the downtown areas of small towns of the midwest.

I feel that there was probably a flow of inspiration happening between the designer(s) of the plastic 416 mailbox and the designers of paper towel dispensers for contemporary public restrooms, but I don't know which direction that flow of inspiration flowed.
