Henrietta Street, Whitby

Henrietta Street, Whitby
At the end of the street the bottom of the Church Steps can be seen joining Church Lane (see link below)

Harbour mouth and piers from the Abbey Steps (HFF everyone)

The street has a colourful history, at one time associated with smuggling and prostitution. It was called Haggerlythe until 1761 when it was renamed Henrietta Street (for his wife) by Nathanial Cholmley who rebuilt the cottages in the hope of creating a street of desirable dwellings. This dream was never properly realised and in 1786 there was a large landslide and a great part of the street disappeared; although it was subsequently rebuilt there were other landslides, the last of which was in 1923.

interessant Doug
Ik merk op dat ,dat watersnood rampen en aardverschuivingen toen ook voorkwamen en toen had men het niet over klimaat verandering en opwarmingen

I understand some of the landslides were due to building on unstable land. Even in these times there have been collapses of parts of the cliffs above the buildings on the street. The remains of bodies and coffins long since buried have in fact come down out of the graveyard on top cliffs with these recent collapses.

Thanks for your visit Fred

With the atmospheric treatment you have given this fabulous picture, I can well imagine what once took place there, as you describe. A superb shot Doug.

Best wishes for a good new week,
Rosa.

I love the sepia tones here that gel beautifully with the history Doug, but also the light gives the building a beautiful glow. A terrific shot with lovely treatment

Your notes are really interesting and reading your response to Fred I was surprised and a bit shocked that some of the old graveyard inhabitants have been dislodged from their graves in recent collapses. What a shock that must be for anyone coming across them!

Nightmares tonight I think!!! Lol!!

Have a great evening

Thanks so much for your visit and generous comments Carol. The back gardens of the houses on the left are where some of the remains would have landed, not very nice! It was fortunate that St. Mary's Church was not damaged by the slippage, it was close. See link below:
