Zitronenfalter nascht an Löwenzahnblüten - A common brimstone is nibbling on dandelion blossoms
Im Bild ein Männchen des Zitronenfalters (Gonepteryx rhamni), der gerade an einer Löwenzahnblüte Nektar saugt. Zitronenfalter sind in mehrerer Hinsicht einzigartig in unserer Tierwelt. Einmal haben sie mit 12 (!) Monaten die höchste Lebenserwartung aller mitteleuropäischer Schmetterlinge. Und außerdem überwintern sie als Falter frei in der Vegetation, auch in Eis und Schnee. Mit Hilfe von Stoffen, welche den Gefrierpunkt der Körperflüssigkeiten bis auf -20 Grad Celcius absenken, ist es ihnen möglich, auch strenge Winter zu überstehen. Eine weitere Besonderheit ist, dass die Falter sofort nach der Landung ihre Flügel zusammenklappen, so dass man die Flügeloberseiten praktisch nie zu sehen bekommt.

Photographed is a male common brimstone (Gonepteryx rhamni) just sucking nectar from a dandelion flower. Common brimstones are unique in our animal world in several respects. Firstly, they have the highest life expectancy of all Central European butterflies, at 12 (!) months. And furthermore, as butterflies they overwinter freely in vegetation, even in ice and snow. With the help of substances that lower the freezing point of the body fluids to -20 degrees Celcius, it is possible for them to survive even harsh winters. Another peculiarity is that the butterflies fold up their wings immediately after landing, so that one practically never gets to see the upper sides of the wings.
In the picture a battered male, which obviously had to go through some adventures.
