The highest administrative court of Turkey decided on 10 July 2020 that the Hagia Sofia (Ayasofia) may be converted into a mosque. Since today (24.07.20) it is used by Muslims. The monumental building and architectural masterpiece was built in the 6th century AD by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian and when the Ottomans conquered Constantinople in 1453, the Hagia Sofia was transformed into a mosque by Sultan Mehmed II. The founder of modern Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, turned the Hagia Sofia into a museum in 1935. Modern Turkey was a secular country, was the message of that time. In this respect, today's transformation into a mosque has great political significance. Although the Hagia Sofia can still be visited (now even free of charge) outside the four times daily prayer times, it is very uncertain whether the many Christian mosaics and symbols will be visible then. It is not yet clear whether the UNESCo World Heritage status can be maintained.

HFF and a good weekend.
As you say, HFF nonetheless!
Mooie en gezonde Weekeinde
A very nice picture, but as you said, a sad event.
I was there in March, days before it got closed due to he virus.
Many people in Turkey are unhappy about the change too..
There are plenty of mosques there. another one is not needed!
Best Wishes, HFF, a nice weekend, and stay safe!!
Peter
I remember the place !
a pity it won't be visited the same way anylonger...
Aber mal zu Ende gedacht. Was wäre, wenn alle religiösen Gebäude zu Mussen würden? Erstrebenswert? Ja/Nein?
Guten Sonntag.
Nora Caracci club has addedWünsche noch einen schönen Abend, ganz liebe Grüße Güni :))
