The Gothic Marienkapelle (Lady Chapel) Wuerzburg in the morning autumn light
The genesis of the Marienkapelle (Lady Chapel) is closely linked to the eradication of the formerly flourishing Jewish community of Wuerzburg. Because of the rumour in the plague year 1349, that the Jews were at fault for the outbreak of the plague by poisoning fountains, on 21th April 1349 a pogrom resulted. The Wuerzburg Jews were murdered, the Jewish quarter was destroyed and the synagogue was burnt down. Soon after the pogrom as a expiation the construction of a wooden chapel was started at the site of the destroyed synagogue.
In 1377 the construction of the present St. Mary's Chapel started with monetary and material donations of Wuerzburg citizens; the chapel was inaugurated 1392. During the bombing of Würzburg on 16th March 1945, the chapel was badly damaged and burned out completely; numerous works of art were lost. The reconstruction took place in the years 1948 to 1961. The pillars and the vaults were, using recyclable remains, newly built up and the interior was given a modern design.
