Der See dient heute vorwiegend zur Wasserregulierung der Dornbirner Ach. Das Kraftwerk Ebensand am oberen Ende des Sees ist noch in Betrieb, hat aber für die Stromerzeugung praktisch keine Bedeutung mehr.
