Don't block the box!! - dedicated to FDNY and Engine Company 23

Don't block the box!! - dedicated to FDNY and Engine Company 23
This was just one of those random shots that I took on holiday in NYC in June 2000 - to me it encapsulates the city - all you really need to add is a soundtrack. Just like any big city it was busy and noisy - the sirens, the traffic and all those people in a rush.

As always I thought "I'll try to add a bit more detail" and duly the internet turns up more than you expect which is why this picture is dedicated to engine company 23.

Of the 343 FDNY personnel who lost their lives as result of "9/11", Engine Company 23 lost 6 of their number, one lieutenant and five firefighters.

The picture shows engine 23 turning on to 5th Avenue - it don't think they can have been on a 'shout' as it looks a bit too relaxed on board. As far as I can tell from Street View this is looking across to East 56th Street

Engine company 23 is based at 215 W. 58th St - known as 'the Lion's Den' - see www.ipernity.com/doc/314201/18628571 for a picture of the engine house
