The highest summit of the Paine range is Cerro Paine Grande. For a long time its elevation was claimed to be 3,050 m, but in August 2011 it was ascended for the third time and found to be 2,884 m, which is still high for southern Patagonia.

Ischigualasto Provincial Park is also called Valle de la Luna ("Valley of the Moon"), due to its moon like appearance. The Ischigualasto Formation contains Late Triassic (Carnian) deposits (231.4 -225.9 million years before the present), with some of the oldest known dinosaur remains, which are the world's foremost with regards to quality, number and importance.
