Planta de Níquel Comandante Ernesto Che Guevara - red land

Planta de Níquel Comandante Ernesto Che Guevara - red land
All the landscape around the nickel plants is red, even the roads. This last image shows the factory from the north. To avoid misunderstandings, sure there is a lot of pollution into the air, the groundwater and the river nearby, but most of the red dust is natural and comes from the ferrous earth. You can find red dirt streets also in areas where no factory is around.

It makes me wonder why we spend vast sums on pollution control when other countries don't give a -------
UK news:- Britains record coal-free run is over after 67days 22 hours and 55 minutes following a coal unit running tests after essential maintenance. This had been the longest run since 1882

Because we (better: the multinational enterprises with billions of profit each year and millions of bonuses for their managers) are easily able to afford the measures for pollution control, and it's good for us and the future of our children, if we do so. For many "poor" countries over the whole world it's much more difficult, even more if massive US-sanctions opress the country since 60 years. And "our" multinational companies don't give a s... too, if they operate their factories in these poor Third World countries. Only profit counts at the end, in our world. One of the nickel plants here in Moa is a joint venture with the canadian company Sherritt International, by the way.
Thank you Peter!

And if we would take that amount of money and invest in poor coutnries on pollution reducing the effect on global emissions would be much higher - but why aren't we reasonable?

Can't be very pleasant to live nearby or to work there. Makes me think of an aluminium factory in Fife. It was smaller and the dust wasn't that visible but it coated the road and caused fairly frequent accidents.

I suspect those chimney's belching out god knows what, is the reason they don't like photos being taken of the factory!

Even if people understand the reason why (as you have eloquently explained in your reply to Peter (above)), it still doesn't make for good PR :-(

This is exactly the reason. They are always afraid to have bad PR especially in the states, where several websites and "journalists" are only working for bashing Cuba, the regime and the living conditions. Since 60 years.
