Some ships survived the attack, and an amazing number were salvaged and back in action in a matter of months because Pearl Harbor also had dry dock and shipyard facilities that survived.

There was supposed to be a third wave which was cancelled by Yamamoto (I think) because he thought (I think) that too many planes would not survive. Anyway, that third wave might well have destroyed the drydock and shipyard facilities that you describe and crippled us even more. Sometimes you wonder if the military were really totally onboard with the hawks back in Tokyo.

Yamamoto was reported to have been ashamed that the attack occurred before a formal declaration of war and was supposed to have said, "I fear we have only awakened a sleeping giant." Nonetheless, he pursued the war to the best of his considerable ability until he was killed in 1943.
