In The Machine ...

In The Machine ...
For this week's Sunday Challenge for which we were asked to create a triptrych.

However, it was made slightly more difficult because we were also instructed to shoot something from 3 different angles and then to convert those images to monochrome before then using them to create the final triptych.

Now, I've got to be honest a triptych for me would have been challenge enough, but to find a subject that I felt I could shoot from 3 different angles, which would work effectively in mono left me pulling out much of what little hair I have left.

And I quickly came to realise that my mind's eye is clearly better suited to seeking out photo opportunities in colour than it is those that will work in mono, be that black and white or otherwise.

In the end, after many, many trials, this is what I ended up with. It's a series of shots of a shower hose which I tied up into a knot before shooting it from various angles.

Initially, I was struggling, really struggling, to get a series of shots without capturing the ends of the hose, but eventually I decided to work with them and try to use them in the overall design to create the effect of a pair of eyes.

The final triptych was then processed in Photoshop and instead of going down the black and white route I elected to convert it into cyanotype, which I thought just lifted the design somewhat and gave it a slightly more sinister edge ... that's if a shower hose can ever look sinister!

Doug Shepherd, , , .t.a.o.n. and 40 other people have particularly liked this photo

Wow, I love what you did, Paul! Necessity is the mother of invention, so they say, and it caused you to be far more creative than you thought you could be. I like the composition and the color you chose as a tint, and guess what? You created a pareidolia, too (looks like an owl face, lol)!

autofantasia club has replied to Valfal
Indeed, I can see the owl Val although I was hoping for something a bit more futuristic and menacing - lol! ;)

Anyway, owl or no owl, I'm glad you like what I've done and thank you for adding it into your faves too .... much appreciated! :)

This is brilliant Paul..............what an imagination you have! I think the overall effect is indeed quite sinister looking (I'm torn between a steampunk owl or a steampunk octopus)!!

Top marks for the processing as well. This would be amazing printed large and framed!

Ha, now a steampunk owl sounds much more like a result. Always fancied having a go at that 'steampunkery' myself Keith so I'm delighted with your comparison! Thank you for the fave too ... much appreciated! :)

As for getting it printed large, now there's a thought! ;)

Goodness Paul*************************** This is truly fantastic! Be proud of this!
At first I thought it could be one of the Sesame Street characters, then like Val, I saw the owl and then I thought oh oh an alien! lol The overall tone used for the monochrome really does make the hose take on depth and interest. This looks great on black and enlarged. Hope you frame this. :)

What a great "owl's face"! ;-DD

Very cool idea and result - I had also problems to take my shots from different angles resp. with fixed focal length

autofantasia club has replied to Dida From Augsburg
Yes, a challenging week in lots of ways Dida and as you say working with a fixed focal length in particular was extra tricky. Still, I'm glad you like what I eventually came up with and appreciate the star! :)

I was almost over the edge with you, Paul. I really didn't enjoy this challenge, mainly because I didn't like any of the framing available. Since I don't use photo shop or Lightroom or anything fancy the framing was very limited. I did see some new techniques this week that have given me some more ideas in case we have to do this again lol :)
