What's Brexit Mummy ...

What's Brexit Mummy ...
From a very young age children, no matter which country they are born in, are gradually taught the letters of the alphabet.

They learn to recognise them and how they need to be combined to form words: from the simplest to the longest and most complicated.

The majority of the words they will learn have been in use for decades, if not centuries, and would have been recognisable to their ancestors.

However, as both society and technology develop new words are formed and come into common usage.

Brexit is one such new word: an abbreviation of the phrase British exit, which the British media and society in general have and continue to use in relation to the EU referendum held on June 23, 2016.

Now this new and seemingly innocent 6 letter word has disturbed global markets, caused currencies to fluctuate and even led to the British Prime Minister, David Cameron, saying he is to stand down come October.

Such is the power of not only words, but democracy. And make no mistake, for the vast majority of the people who voted for change it is indeed democracy (mixed with unhappiness with EU bureaucrats and Westminster politicians alike) that has led them to choose Brexit ... not racism, small mindedness or a desire to stand apart from the rest of the world.

Let us just hope that when future generations grow up and learn about words they don't come to wish the British electorate had never heard of brexit.

For this week's Sunday Challenge, for which we were asked to show the alphabet.

It didn't need to be the entire alphabet, any series of interesting lettering or even words would do, so this is my take on both the challenge and recent events.

I took a wooden child's learning toy that has letters of the alphabet on one side and words on the other.

Then I laid it on its 'word' side with only the letters required to create 'BREXIT' flipped around and took a shot before manipulating the various parts of the image to bring the letters together into one line.

Fabulous and topical too! I understand that at least one of the Glastonbury artists from Blur started his performance with a short presentation message about democracy. Very topical

Much appreciated Jan as is the fave ... always nice to hear your thoughts! :)

Just hope people realise I'm using this to meet the challenge and as you say be topical rather than trying to make an overt political statement. I reckon it is history and future generations that will decide if it was a wise move or a massive mistake!

Politics is one of many topics .... I can say nothing.
Here in Germany it is time that all this is not so bad and
it even further (again) could be vote.
Especially something to say in English hard for me.
Of all the German cities will probably Frankfurt am most "suffer".

As we might say in this country Katja, for better or worse it feels as if a whole can of worms has just been opened! :(

Very clever, and like Jan said, very topical; I love it!

I find this whole "brexit" topic very interesting mainly because it is a little window into the European Union and perhaps its inadequacies as a political entity. It seems there is good as well as bad with this decision. Such is the reality of a global economy...

Really pleased you like the image and find the subject of interest too Val. Back home in Scotland the vote was overwhelmingly in favour of remaining in the EU so that will almost certainly raise discussions about independence.

And I see on the news this morning that the leader of the Labour party, the official opposition, is coming under increased pressure to stand down. Amidst all the doom and gloom though I did hear one commentator make a strong case for change being a positive force ... let's hope they are right! :)

Not sure what it'll mean in the long-term Hediho ... who knows, it may prove to be a positive force of change for the EU as a whole? :)

Cool idea, Paul! I used to have alphabet building blocks as kid:-)
What Brexit will bring or whether it will come to pass at all only time can tell- there seems to be a lot of shilly shallying by the political classes, obviously they didn't expect the result...

autofantasia club has replied to Gudrun club
Glad you like what I've done Gudrun and thanks for the fave! :)

As for the shilly shallying you're spot on ... many do appear to be either too shocked or too busy worrying about themselves to take a lead ... they need to knuckle down and get on with it, especially in the Labour party, but that's just my opinion. All of the squabbling over the leadership isn't helping anyone! :(

Yes indeed, only time will tell, but as the decision has been made I really feel people need to try and be positive ... change isn't always a destructive force! :)

A lovely shot.

What is scary is that the most trending question in the UK was "What is the EU?" www.cnet.com/news/what-is-the-eu-trends-on-google-in-the-uk-as-the-country-votes-to-leave. You'd hope that they would know before voting.

Colourful interpretation of a very black and white question.

Also wondering why the UK government is so slow in requesting the exit...
autofantasia club has replied to Diederik Santema club
Great comment Diederik ... I guess that's the thing about referendums in that they are so black and white!

As for being slow I guess I can see why they want Cameron's successor in before they trigger the exit mechanism, but there again it prolongs the uncertainty. I can't help but wonder if the establishment is still trying to think if there's a way to overturn the outcome even if it's only to call another referendum.

The narrowness of the outcome certainly hasn't helped nor has the fact that only around 74% of people that were eligible to vote actually voted.

Perhaps it's time to make voting compulsory even if for some people it means returning a spoiled paper rather than making a decision. Hey ho! :)
