Holding Onto My Love

Holding Onto My Love
Yet another challenging, no pun intended, week as far as The Sunday Challenge was concerned.

The theme this week was selective lighting, meaning as I understood it a situation where the photographer controls the light.

So I came up with a few ideas, one of which resulted in me spilling a tray full of Coca-Cola over my workstation. I hasten to add that was not part of the plan and no photographs were taken!

Anyway, of the three themes I came up with, I've decided to use this little lady here for the main challenge entry.

We've had her for many years and she’s stating to show her age with a couple of pieces from her derrière missing completely, but from the front sat on our kitchen window sill I think she’s still rather cute.

I took this shot with my macro lens, which I have something of a love hate relationship with and with manual focus … a thing I rarely do with any great success.

To give you an idea of scale the little bear is just over 5cm tall: 2 inches in old money. I had it sat on my desk with a piece of black card serving as an infinity curve. It was late at night so the room was in total darkness.

Lighting was provided from the left with a small Maglite torch and from the right via an even smaller Cyba-lite, which I had shining down a piece of cardboard tubing in the guise of a home-made snoot.

That’s the joy of TSC, it pushes you to try new things: to tackle new subjects and to push yourself beyond your comfort zone. I mean, this time last week I didn't even know what a snoot was - lol.

Well what do you know, it's not even 5.00pm here and I've got my entry for this week's challenge uploaded ... think I need to go have a lie down! ;)

This is fantastic - she actually has a scary feel to her, disappearing into the dark like this.

well isn't she a cutie... missing butt or not. you nailed the lighting perfectly! I admit to not knowing wtf a 'snoot' was this time last week either. Now I am thinking of making one too. I do very much hope the coke did not do any damage!

Thanks for the kind comment and the fave Wendi. As for the coke, I kind of got away with it. Just a soggy carpet and a great sense of embarrassment.

With regards the snoot, I just used the cardboard tube left over from a used packet of aluminium foil. Apparently, the narrower the tube the more focused the light. There are quite a few good videos about making your own, but I'm sure someone in the group mentioned making one out of a Pringles tube ... it was that which made me read up on them to start with. Sorry, I can't remember who it was.

oh I already have hunted down the stuff to make one... I was going to use that craft foam paper...(because I have some) then I saw you used your snoot with a flashlight... so back to the drawing board so to speak.. my lens is too big for my flash, so I will try one for a flashlight now..
geeze you were thinking...
I didn't see the Pringles can option that someone posted.. and hey that would be a delicious option though! My tin foil is almost done and hey why not make a few for different lights. Cheap quick and easy..

There's me thinking you'd just twitch your nose to conjure one up! ;)

I just love your story Paul and you know I would love this darling little girl. She's adorable and perfectly lit by your snoot. (Now I just need to go look up what a snoot is exactly.) Fun challenging challenge this week and you made the most of it, but I would have liked to see a picture of the Coke accident too. ;)

(Okay, I looked up "snoot" Paul. How clever and what a great idea to make your own. Yep, we always learn something new each week in this group.)

Thanks Karen for the fave and the lovely comment ... I thought you'd like this little lady.

As for the snoot, once you've made it you might also want to try making one with a grid too. ;)

Thank you Paul. I will keep that in mind. :)

what's the 'grid' for?
autofantasia club has replied to Shuttering Yukon
If I remember what I read correctly, and it was a few days ago, the grid ensures the light fall is softer at the edges than with just a snood on its own. Oh heck, I hope I'm right about that! ;)

Thanks Harriet for the lovely comment and the fave. Like I said in my description she's showing her age, but was something we bought when first courting and from the front she's still too cute to throw away

I think struggling is half the fun even if it doesn't feel like it at the time Val.

Anyway, glad you like the shot and thanks for adding it into your faves! :)
