I liked the juxtaposition of the Mk3 parked alongside Lily!

Paul, I'm sure 'Lily' has her proud nose in the air while this upstart is nearby! Nothing wrong with this new VW creation, in fact with the engineering pedigree it is certain to be a popular and reliable member of the VAG family.

There's just one tiny thing that I find hard to comprehend with many motor manufacturers past and present........why can't they think up *new* names for their cars.

The Mk1 and Mk2 Scirocco is, without doubt a desirable classic car and to many was a classic in the making since it's very conception. It's unique design set it way apart from others in the same class. Can the same be said about the Mk3 Scirocco? Personally, I don't think so.

To my mind, the Mk3 Scirocco design is a 'new' design, it does not have any of the characteristics of the Mk1 and Mk2, outwardly anyway, and as a new design it should have been given a new name, not pretend to be something it's not. If It's going to be a classic at some point in the future, then it should do it on it's own merits.

You're preaching to the converted here Tim. I like the new car, but it is just that a new car and it should have had its own name.

I'm not saying that because I object to manufacturers revisiting earlier icons. I think the New Beetle, Mini and Fiat 500 are excellent updates on the classic design. They pay homage to the original and there are loads of design cues that echo what has gone before.

Show someone who has never before seen any of the 'new' versions these cars and I guarantee they'd say "that looks like so and so" because the signals are all there. However, I don't think you can say that about the Mk3 Scirocco. Apart from the fact that it's a VW, has two doors and four wheels there's not one single design cue to say "Scirocco".

In truth, the real Mk3 Scirocco was the Coraddo, but that's a debate all in itself! ;)
