Funny thing, this. Seems to be the 980 cc BMW R100R engine from the 90s.

Not sure about the engine other than the DVLA records show it as being 980cc in size. I have another shot of it with some relevant links here ...

Yes, I saw it. THX for the links! Concerning the engine I'm pretty sure. The "round" valve covers, the black stripe around the crankcase and the label reading just BMW and not anything other R blablabla ;-) tells me. This engine was used in bikes like R100R, R100RS, R100RT, and R100GS. Performance BTW is 44kW @ 6500 rpm.
