It's the largest concentration of Arab silos to store cereals in the Iberian Peninsula. Its origin is unknown, however, there is some evidence that the silos were used until the 15th century.
NATURAL SALINES OF RIO MAIOR

The oldest reference that is known relatively to the salines, is about eight centuries of history, being explored a little later to the foundation of Portugal as an indepent nation (1139). However, it is thought that before, since the pre-history, this rock salt mine was already used.
