Die Klöppel oder Schlägel bestehen aus Holz und können mit Leder oder Filz überzogen sein. Hackbretter sind Saiteninstrumente, die nach der Art der Tonerzeugung auch zu den Schlaginstrumenten gezählt werden. Zwischen Nordamerika, West- und Osteuropa, dem Mittleren und dem Fernen Osten sind regional unterschiedliche Formen von Hackbrettern verbreitet. Unter der deutschen Bezeichnung „Hackbrett“ werden im engeren Sinn Formvarianten verstanden, die in der alpenländischen Volksmusik beheimatet sind.
Die europäischen Hackbretter sind mit der persischen santur verwandt. Das moderne Zymbal, das Konzertzymbal oder Pedalzymbal, entwickelte und erzeugte Vencel József Schunda (1845–1923)[1] um 1870 in Budapest. Tragbare kleinere Vorläufer lassen sich bis ins 16. Jahrhundert in Ungarn nachweisen. Das rumänische țambal entspricht dem țimbal in der Republik Moldau. Namensverwandte Hackbretter heißen in Polen cymbaly, in Weißrussland tsimbali, in der Ukraine tsymbaly, in Lettland cimbole und in Litauen cimbolai. In Griechenland ist das dem ungarischen zymbal entsprechende tsimbalo heute selten, bekannter ist das vom persischen santur abgeleitete santouri.
