I will try to answer you in my BROKEN English.
I use a neutral ( = non-ethinc ) language as Esperanto, because I think that it would be unfair to use, in the international communication, ethnic languages.
Dear Nada, I see that you are Australian, so your mother-tongue is English.
I am Italian, so my mother-tongue is Italian.
So, there is a language distance between us...
Well, what can we do to communicate? How can we cover this distance?
Solution 1: I force you to learn Italian: all the effort is on your shoulders (to learn ethnic languages is a very difficult thing), and I enjoy the privilege of using my mother-tongue
Solution 2: You force me to learn English: all the effort is on my shoulders (to learn ethnic languages is a very difficult thing), and you enjoy the privilege of using your mother-tongue
Solution 3: We both do a little effort (Neutral Non-Ethnic International Planned languages - particualrly Esperanto - are really far easier than ethnic ones) to cover just HALF of the language distance between us: we meet each other in the middle of that distance. So, nobody of us force the other one, and nobody enjoys unfair privileges.

If you want to listen how Esperanto sounds, you can use some of the links that I've listed in my article Esperantlingvaj radiostacioj (For example, I coluld suggest you to try to listen "Pola Radio" - Radio Polland).
