Taro Tsunami Wall looking west, Iwate 田老 岩手
This corresponds to a "before" picture I took. The wall was 10m high and the tsunami was about 17m, so it only formed a 17m high waterfall on the backside, scooping out the earth and washing the non-concrete or steel-I-beamed houses away. This original wall held without much damage. The two newer walls didn't hold up as well. The wall that extended to the harbor was totally destroyed and the south extension to the floodgates had parts of the concrete shell broken away.
