Bunraku Puppet with a good face, Seiwa-son, Kumamoto 清和文楽邑 清和村 熊本
In eastern Kumamoto-ken along Highway 218 in the small village of Seiwa-son, is the Seiwa Bunraku Mura, or Seiwa Puppet Village, where Japanese puppet theater is given several times per week. Behind the theater in a circular building is an exhibit of puppets and their construction. This one had a swivel face that would turn into a devil. It usually took 3 people to handle one puppet. The puppeteers would wear black so your mind could turn them out. Recently, however, in places like Osaka, the head puppeteer wears fancy colored kimono and detracts from the performance to give himself attention.
