Omamori 御守 at Kushida Shrine - Fukuoka 福 岡

Omamori 御守 at Kushida Shrine - Fukuoka 福 岡
A box of amulets for sale at the shrine.

Prayers are written on paper which are placed in the little cloth bag with the string and bell attached. You use the string to attach the amulet to your backpack or car mirror or whatever you like. The bell is to get the attention of the appropriate god to read the prayer and perhaps carry out what is on the paper. These in the photos are more generic and based on a person's birthday. The ones on the left are arranged by zodiac sign, such as inoshishi (boar), inu (dog) hitsuji (sheep), and uma (horse). The ones on the right are arranged by birth month (January=1 through December =12). In addition to these, there are amulets to be successful in school, for safe driving, for having children, and about anything else you can think of. I have the Japanese gods work overtime by having a "driving safety" one hanging in my car in the US.
