Toyoson Bamboo from Mizunashigawa & hamlet of Ikenohara 内ノ原 東陽村 八代市

Toyoson Bamboo from Mizunashigawa & hamlet of Ikenohara 内ノ原 東陽村 八代市
The first buildings you see in Toyo Village as you come over the pass from Yatsushiro are in this small hamlet. 20 years ago the area around the flooded field (including the flooded field) was filled with thatch-roofed houses. There are few occupied houses left. The bamboo protects the hamlet from landslides by holding the soil in place. Notice that there is almost no natural vegetation on the hillsides; it's all planted cedar or bamboo. About the only places to see natural vegetation on mountainsides is in Hokkaido or on the sacred island of Miyajima, which has never been logged or owned by a village or person.
