On the path up the Cobbler from Arrochar grow a number of these Blackthorn trees (prunus spinosa) producing sloes in the Autumn. Not something I'd like to fall into while coming down the path in the dark. Scotland December 2006.

Thanks. Yes I was stopped in my tracks when I first found this. Nice bit of armoured protection. The berries from the tree can be used to flavour gin, with some added sugar. Sloe Gin has a deep blackberry colour imparted from the fruit. There's a photo of the blossom earlier in my stream.
