Machine Gun Troop, 13th Cavalry Regiment, Fort Ril…

27 Nov 2017 2 3 283
A soldiers photo for the Vintage Photos Theme Park. Flag: "13 MG." Caption (see full version ): "Machine Gun Troop, 13 Cavalry, Fort Riley, Kans., January 13, 1928." Credit: "Photo by Anderson Studio, J.C.K.S." This photograph of the Machine Gun Troop of the United States Army's 13th Cavalry Regiment includes over 80 men along with a flag, five trophies, and eight machine guns (take a look at the full version of the photo to see all the men, guns, and other details). The regiment was stationed at Fort Riley , Kansas, and Anderson Studio of Junction City, Kansas, took the photo. According to the bookseller from whom I purchased this photo, the man seated to the left of the trophies is Colonel John C. Mullenix (1889-1986), who served in the U.S. Army through both world wars.

Berchtesgaden Salt Mine, September 17, 1962

13 Jan 2018 8 6 559
A looking at the camera photo for the Vintage Photos Theme Park. Sign on the wall behind the train: "Salzbergwerk Berchtesgaden, 17.9.62" ("Berchtesgaden Salt Mine, 9/17/62.") Twenty-four riders on a mine train are peering intently at the photographer's camera in this souvenir photo from the Berchtesgaden Salt Mine in Bavaria, Germany, on September 17, 1962. For a similar photo from a different mine, see Hallein Salt Mine Tour, near Salzburg, Austria, July 31, 1962

Men with Tiny Hats

04 Feb 2018 3 4 288
A photo of banquets, feasts, meals for the Vintage Photos Theme Park. Looks like the banquet for the League of Men with Tiny Hats was just about to begin when this photo was snapped (mouse over the image for a close-up view of the men and their miniscule headgear). I have no idea who these guys were or why they were wearing those hats. It doesn't seem to be a festive occasion—no one's really smiling or laughing at the sight of more than 70 heads festooned with funny hats. Ironically, some of the men's regular-size hats are hanging on racks at the back of the room.

Hatchet Job

24 May 2018 1 2 222
For the Vintage Photos Theme Park, a photo of troublemakers and misfits (that guy always was a troublemaker: photo featuring a misfit—someone set apart from the rest of the people by dress, action, expression, etc.) . A jolly bunch of men and women are posing under a tree—and on a tree house or platform attached to the tree—for what turned out to be an overexposed photo that then faded over time. After I scanned the photo and adjusted its contrast, I was able to spot some interesting details, like the beaming smiles on some of the women's faces and the bow ties and striped shirts worn by a few of the men. One fellow at upper right is smoking a pipe and holding the legs of a guy who's sitting on the railing above him. And then there's the dude who's smack dab in the middle of the group (see a cropped version for a close-up view). He's puffing on a cigarette and seems to be lunging toward a man in the front row. Judging by the blur of the hatchet he's holding in his raised hand, the man in front received a blow to the head just after the photographer snapped the photo. Or at least that seems to be what this troublemaker wanted us to believe. Notice, too, how the young woman to the left of the hatchet wielder is grinning. It's hard to tell if she's in on the joke or is actually oblivious to the impending hatchet chop. P.S. For another rabble-rouser caught on film, see Aieeeeee!!!

Class of 1912, Clearfield, Pennsylvania

19 Jun 2018 2 2 359
A real photo postcard with "McDowell Studio, Clearfield, Pa." embossed in the lower right-hand corner. "The Brown Family" is the only thing written on the other side. Nineteen graduating seniors—seventeen young woman and two young men—posed for this photo in 1912. Given the location of the photo studio, these may be Clearfield High School graduates, but I haven't been able to confirm that (one site— Old C.H.S. Yearbooks - The "Bison Project" —reproduces yearbooks from the school but the earliest one currently available is the1915 edition).

Group on High Rock, Pen Mar, Maryland

17 Jun 2018 1 2 227
A summer vacation/holiday photo for the Vintage Photos Theme Park. Pen Mar Park , an amusement park and resort area located in the Blue Ridge Mountains along the Mason-Dixon line separating Maryland and Pennsylvania, was a popular summertime destination in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In this photo, a group of men and women pose at the base of the three-tiered High Point observation tower located a couple of miles away from the amusement park (see also the full version of the photo). A postcard view (below) shows all three levels of the observation tower. Visitors to the amusement park could also get their photo taken in front of a painted backdrop of the High Rock tower (see below).

Dolls and Bears

19 Jul 2018 3 2 282
A teddy bears photo for the Vintage Photos Theme Park. A real photo postcard of a gathering of women along with their dolls, teddy bears (including a Steiff, I'm told), and maybe one or two stuffed lions or dogs. No date, location, or other information, unfortunately. For close-up views, see cropped versions showing the front row and the two back rows

Orphans Home Band, Loysville, Pa.

19 Jul 2018 1 352
A real photo postcard showing the Tressler Orphans' Home Band. "Tressler" was part of its name beginning sometime in the nineteenth century, so I'm not sure why it's missing from the drum in this early twentieth-century photo. For a later incarnation of the band—with spiffier uniforms and a different drumhead—see Tressler Orphans' Home Band, Loysville, Pa.
