The Horsehead Nebula

The Horsehead Nebula
IC434 - The Horsehead Nebula is a thick black cloud of dust and gas that can be seen only because it blots out some of the light coming from behind it.

The photo was taken through an 8" Celestron telescope using a Paramount ME mount to provide excellent tracking. The camera was an SBIG ST2000 cooled CCD unit. I shot three 10 minute exposures with red, blue, and green filters and eight 10 minute luminescent exposures and then combined them after subtracting dark frames. The camera was cooled to -30 C. to minimize thermal noise from the CCD chip. The image processing was done in CCD Stack, with some finish up work in Photoshop. I recently acquired a Canon 20Da and hope to try this photo again this winter to see how it comes out. I'm shooting through a 14" now so its a little more challenging.

Henning Grund has particularly liked this photo
