Mark Hewins on Keith Rowe
I never really wanted to play with the copyists.
Keith Rowe invented 'prepared Guitar'.
Thats who I was interested to work with. The source.
Keith used to share an apartment with Liam Genockey, just down the road from me, opposite Streatham Bus Station. It was my luck that as a young man I spent many happy hours with Keith listening to his theory and process.

Do the established groups who now dominate the scene have anything more concrete to offer the course of free improvisation than their ad hoc counterparts favoured in yesteryear? Or is that element of the unfamiliar, the essence of ad hoc groups, vital to a music 'plucked from the air'? Its that old theoretical chestnut which has pervaded discussions and writings on improvised music; and, suffice to say, where untried improvising formations are concerned, previewers are often reliant on conjecture. Some groups, though, are obvious leaders into exciting musical territory - and Saturdays roster at the Oporto boasts one of them, with resident bassist Tony Moore and drummer Dave Alexander joined by guitarists Keith Rowe and Mark Hewins.

Rowe, from the legendary AMM, came first from a Jazz background, eventually to throw convention into the bin, transforming the instrument into a highly elaborate sound source. - motors applied to the strings to effect drone-like sounds, detuning etc.
Hewins is second generation, more conventionally rooted, although similarly concerned with the possibilities unearthed by amplifying the instrument: Hammer-style fingering; rubbing the body of the instrument to evoke ghostly, choral sounds. Hewins is a probable heir to Hendrix's mantle - not so much for stylistic references more for the effect of taking the listener to giddying electronic heights.
