Juvenile Magpie WB Painted
TSC - Fun with White Balance

On this photo (original in note) I changed the white balance to tungsten to get the blue effect. In processing in Lightroom I took a brush, (as one would do for selective colour) and set it for a more normal white balance for the scene. With the brush I brushed the tree branch the bird is perched upon, his white feathers, his beak and the CD.

I also had some fun with an older picture, photographed outside of our challenge week. It is also in the notes and on Not the Sunday Challenge.

We have a couple of juvenile magpies learning the ropes in our back yard. Notice his baby feathers and that his (or her) tail feathers are not yet fully grown. They are mature enough to hop/fly from branch to branch but little more. During a strong wind the other day it was amusing to see one of them holding his balance while balancing on the fence. The parents are never far away and nag constantly at their young. I think once this one learns to fly he will get his own Discman.

Indycaver (Norm), Wierd Folkersma, Christine Rose, Malik Raoulda and 9 other people have particularly liked this photo

Very nice effect in this one. We had six baby magpies this year, but that was quite a while ago now.

Lovely shot!

Yes, it certainly makes the whole scene much "colder" than the original!

Delightful magpie shot......the CD was unexpected.
I think the building one is fantastic too

I think this CD hanging in the tree is supposed to be a deterrent. High winds have wrapped it around the branch and it just sits there now. Teenagers and their sounds. :)

kids these days: aren't they spoilt early, getting a discman before they properly learn to fly.....

I'm not a fan of tungsten outdoors, I do like the original though :)

I was hoping that someone would do something with tungsten or fluorescent bulbs indoors and play with the WB. Other than blue effects from the tungsten setting outdoors I thought that indoor lighting might create some opportunities with the green light from the fluorescents. I used to get that green glow from film days indoors from the fluorescents and the unmistakable orange from tungsten lighting. That will be my next project. Some folks have done some wonderful things with the outdoor tungsten this week.

I like the original of this photo, too, and I really like what you did with the second inset image!

Appreciate the work but really do not like these birds. They steal the hedgerow eggs I fact they will take anything! My neighbour put a tub of beer down to catch slugs and the magpie flew off with that too. Delinquent.

We do as well. They drive our robins out of the neighborhood in the spring. Once the babies are born it is a constant cacophony of magpie noise from morning till night. My wife would like to make them an endangered species.

I just about used the building but then I remembered the prime directive that came down a couple of weeks ago about shooting in the week of the challenge.

First of all Congratulation on Explore Pappy! Quite the young Magpie ... like his/her baby feathers ... makes for a soft look . Quite a difference between the images and that tall building looks great. :) I found this to be an enjoyable challenge. :)
