After finishing high school Vera taught elementary school in a one-room school house called the "Goss School" in Fulton County, Indiana. It was called the Goss School probably because it was built on land acquired from the Goss family (descendants of Jacob Gass and Elisabeth Läner of Rothenfluh, Basel Canton, Switzerland). It was built well before 1876 and ceased operation in 1926. Vera taught there for one year before taking up a teaching position at Rochester Elementary School for four years. (As was common for women teachers at the time, she gave up teaching when she got married.)
Identified people are (from left to right): Raymond Showley, Raymond Feustermaks?, Claude A????, Herschel Goss (the big eighth-grader in back), Carl McCroskey, Gerald McCroskey, (an unknown girl), Dale Apt, Olive Apt, Lois? Feustermak?, (unidentified girl), Bernice Apt, Vera (obscured by Bernice's head), E?nes Apt, H???? Showley, Lester Showley, and a Feustermaks? boy.
