Statue??

Statue??
I was standing next to the lake at the entrance of London Wetlands Centre with another photographer. This lake has a number of bird sculptures and when I saw this I couldn't believe a heron would hunt in such a pea soup of duckweed. So I thought it was another - very good - sculpture. The other photographer insisted it was real. She was right!

Jeff Farley, Mitch Seaver, Kreatives, Claudine Gaulier-Denis and 13 other people have particularly liked this photo

Excellent find Roy, yes, now and then one meets a very obliging Heron.
Wonderful photo.

Probaply it's after something that hides near to the surface, so it can fish after pattern movements rather sight of the whole prey. I have seen it often, probaply as we got many ponds, coves and drains here which grow a tightly covered surface in season, but I have to admire their nerves. What if they stab at a carp near the own weight, or worse a young pike with huge teeth, or even catch a swimming grass snake at the wrong angle? Then again there are Blue Herons in Florida, that even use this hunting technique in gator waters.... and sometimes you meet the odd specimen with only one leg.....
