White Bryony

White Bryony
This hedgerow creeper with attractive white flowers followed by even more attractive red berries was found growing on a caravan park boundary in Gronant. It is a plant worth knowing because every part of it is deadly poisonous, especially the roots. Strange as it's a member of the cucumber family.

Christine Boes-Schiller, Jan Hemels, Daniel Palacin, Kenny and 2 other people have particularly liked this photo

I see it actually the other way -- Cucurbitacin is highly poisonous, of course, the only strange thing is our clever ancestors managed to breed it nearly completely out of most modern eatable varieties so early and create a great variety of tasty healthy cucumbers, zuccinis and pumpkins. They started with barely palatable and not deadly but just a bit stool-softening wild forms and created partheogenetic plants making the bitter and purging stuff producing parts recessive or so, I did read about it when I researched why perenial upkeep of nice pricey hybrid zuccini from seeds in a tasty ripe specimen in the yard than a new package would produce woodsey, hard and somewhat bitter tasting smal fruits each time.
