Beautiful Beast

Beautiful Beast
Viewing large will reveal the beautiful patternation and irridescent eyes of this small horsefly. However, this beauty belies the beastly nature of the clegg (sometimes spelled cleg). The females have a real taste for human blood - especially mine. Photographed at Burton Mere Wetlands.

Gerald Schmitt, Kenny, Christine Boes-Schiller, Maeluk and 2 other people have particularly liked this photo

Ewww, it's Vampirella the fly! Don't encourage her or she will take your blood and leave an itching welt in exchange!
Why must an animal with so beautiful mesmerizing patterns in the eyes be just a mean biter!

I remember them from my childhood, and also years later in Wiltshire.

Well caught, Roy.

Many thanks Joan. I remember them from June in mid-Wales when a brief rain shower following a warm spell caused them to fly with a vengence. I must have killed over 100, but there were many, many well-fed survivors of this massacre!

Great shot!
Their bites seem to itch more than anything else that bites me!
