Parkgate Lapwing Panic

Parkgate Lapwing Panic
This a layered photograph. In the foreground, cool as a cucumber, is a little egret. Just behind is a flock of lapwing in their usual flap. Behind them is a group of teal executing an emergency takeoff, which usually means something is around. Sure enough, behind them there is an incoming marsh harrier.

I was photographing the lapwing - the harrier came as a surprise!

Great behavioral shot! Amazing how herons often apear so desinterested in really dangeous birds of prey, whilst they tend to get alarmed near any unconcealed birdwatcher!

Serendipity at it's best. A great image. When I was a kid I would see lots of lapwing and I loved to watch them twist and turn in there large flocks. Now they have nearly all gone from the fields around where I live. I can see them on the Somerset levels and occasionally in the local fields, but not in the large flocks that I remember.

Thanks David. We are lucky enough here to have flocks of hundreds or even thousands of lapwing over-wintering, especially between Parkgate and Burton on the Dee.
