Sociable Moorhen

Sociable Moorhen
For most of the year, moorhen are fiercely territorial. This rule is obviously dropped in winter - these three are part of a group of 30-40 who were within 50m of each other. Photographed from the Inner Marsh Farm hide at Burton Mere Wetlands.

Mackedwars, Richard Boucher, Xata, homaris and 9 other people have particularly liked this photo

I was farther along at Thurstaston and watching some moorhens. They were in a reed bed though and I couldn't get a decent photograph of them while I was watching.

Definitely looks like they behave differently in winter. In summer they'd be ripping feathers by now.

Very nicely captured Roy.
Yes, many normally aggressive territorial birds seem to change during winter, thinking of all the Robins I have feeding together as if the greatest of friends.

Many thanks John. Also heard of dozens of wrens roosting together and they're nearly as pugilistic as robins!

Roy, como se estarán poniendo las patas en esa ciénaga esas aves. me imagino que tratarán de capturar gusanos, lombrices y demás insectos de los humedales. Ellos sabrán. Gran foto. Eduardo.
