Male Kestrel

Male Kestrel
Mostly I seem to encounter female kestrels, but here is the exception to the rule! Photographed at Burton Mere Wetlands. It was chilly, so he's a little ruffed up.

Thanks Sonja. I'm not a vole, so that's a safe assumption!

A lovely shot of my favourite hawk. When I was a boy in the New forest and later on the edge of the Downs in Dorset, it seemed to me that the site of a hovering kestrel was a common sight, but certainly not now. I read 'A kestrel for a knave' when I was a boy and it really captured my imagination. I wish I could see more of these beautiful creatures, but like the skylarks I also remember from childhood they seem to be uncommon today.

Many thanks David. Fortunately their numbers seem to be holding up on the Dee marshes. Same for skylarks around here, especially on the North Wirral coast.
