Painted Lady on Knapweed

Painted Lady on Knapweed
A topside shot of the pristine painted lady I encountered walking through the mid-Wirral farmland.

I particularly like this one, Roy. But most of your butterfly photos are great. I wish I could obtain the same, however I must walk too heavily, or try to get too close, or not have a lens long enough, or take too much time, because they always fly off before I can get a decent picture or even position myself for it...!

Many thanks Dominique. They can be frustrating subjects. I have two approaches. If they are intently feeding or it's early in the day and they're cold I will try and get close with a 100mm macro lens. When they are flitting about I will follow them around with a long lens - usually 600mm, but in this case a 270mm - and try and snatch shots whenever they land from a range of around 2m (minimum focus on the 600mm)

They promised a mass invasion of these beauties this year but so far I have only seen one. Great capture Roy

Many thanks Jim. It's the fifth I've seen, but I wouldn't class that a 'mass invasion'!

A nice image, I all ways welcome them when they arrive. I don't know about you, but I saw a lot early on in the Summer and thought that we where going to get an influx, then strangely they seemed to disappear. *
