Wonderful shot Roy. I was once on the Condor ferry to the channel Islands and a Gannet followed the ship nearly all the way from Poole to the rocks off, of the rock near Alderney. I think it was slip streaming behind the ship. The Condor will travel at speeds up to 45 mph, and the bird was right behind the boat, effortlessly gliding. How it knew we where going in the right direction, I don't know, but it was a great view of this bird flying. I only wish I had a camera.

Many thanks David. I've met many gannets at sea on research vessels, although they are lucky to manage 10 knots!

Thank you Roy for your reply. I have no idea how fast the ferry was travelling, but I am sure the bird was deliberately in it's slipstream and using it, similar to a pilot using air currants to increase there speed. We passed the rocks, small Islands, about 1/2 a mile off. one of which was white with bird poo, The bird pealed off and flew towards the rock, where there where many birds circling.
