Large Skipper Female Topside

Large Skipper Female Topside
I am slowly learning the differences between small and large skippers thanks largely to the UK Butterflies web site. In a nutshell, small skippers are much plainer and have bicoloured antennae. The sex was determined from the absence of the band of scent scales on the forewing.

Nice shot. Also diagnostic is the hooks at the ends of the antennae for this, the large skipper, as is clearly visible in this shot.

Many thanks Mike. These criteria are invaluable. It's amazing how much confusion there is between these species. All the talk on the reserve about that large hatch over the last week was of small skipper. So far, everything I've managed to photograph (10-20 individuals) has turned out to be large skipper.

I'd say it's a bit early for Small Skipper. The Large Skipper tends to peak at the end of June and appears about 2 weeks before the Small and Essex Skippers which generally peak around the 2nd and 3rd week of July.. Down here in Sussex we also get the lovely and rarer Silver Spotted Skipper, but that's in August.
